Information
Femmes in Film was created to show people the common cliches of feminine people in media, mostly cinema. Playing with different archetypes like the ‘bad girl’, the infamous ‘manic pixie dream girl’, and a manifestation of female sin, AKA 'she-devil’. My beginning statement was something along the lines of ‘I will be depicting the Madonna-whore complex written about by Sigmund Freud’ which, in a loose sense, I did accomplish. But, in reality, I focused more on the Femmes themselves than on how men like Freud viewed them. This change felt more like I was reclaiming the character of “Bimbo, slut, she-devil, etc.” and embracing the persona. I shot all of these photos on my digital camera, which made the shooting simpler. I styled, did makeup, and directed all of the characters myself. I really demanded creative control over their appearances to curate certain looks. I shot most vertically, but I really like the ‘movie’ illusion the horizontal ones give. Femmes in Film was such a fun process; many Pinterest boards were created, and many nights were spent editing or printing. For my future projects, I want to take the process I learned from this project and try to push my idea further. I really enjoy my concept, but I think I could’ve gone further with it. I definitely want to revisit or rework the idea.
